Media Tie-in explain

Main Post:

I don't know what Media tie-in books mean can someone explain.

Top Comment: Media tie-in books are books that are based on existing movies or TV series. The media in "media tie-in" is referencing those movies or TV shows that the book is based on while "tie-in" just means that the book is connected to those movies or TV shows by using the same characters and settings.

Social Media Tie in for sharing friend codes!

Main Post:

Not only can you copy and paste your friend code, but send it to other apps, like What's App, Twitter, default text apps, and... my dating apps!? Interesting. if they added a button for, say, announcing time/day/location of raids, we'd really be set!

Edit: I know it's a standard share feature. Seeing as we didn't have any before (but every other official Nintendo mobile app launched with that option AND a friend's list), it's certainly a breakthrough for this game, especially for those who remember that Ingress has full-featured chat in-app

Media With the Best Tie-In Novels?

Main Post:

I tend to focus my reading more on challenging, thought-provoking works of SF, but I also have a soft spot for pulpy fare as well, especially as palate cleansers. I've always loved the idea of media tie-in novels that expand upon TV shows, movies, video games, TTRPGs, etc. and have read several across many properties.

So which media property do you think has the best collection of accompanying novels? I don't personally care if they are canon or not (e.g. Star Wars Legends, Star Trek), I am just looking for fun books that aren't terribly written. These types of novels generally have poor reputations since they are often just money grabs, but I know there are good, entertaining books out there too.

Just as examples, I'm thinking along the lines of:

  • Star Wars
  • Star Trek
  • Warhammer 40K
  • Battletech
  • Forgotten Realms
  • Dragonlance
  • Babylon 5

Top Comment: The Eric Nylund Halo books are really solid, especially The Fall of Reach and Ghosts of Onyx. But tbh my top picks would be any of the Matthew Stover Star Wars books. Shatterpoint is Heart of Darkness plus Mace Windu and Force ethics; Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor is a super meta, self-referential literary dissection of Star Wars mythology; his novelization of Revenge of the Sith is borderline criminal in how much better it is than the movie; and Traitor is the single best-written Star Wars book ever. Most of the Star Wars IP writers are writing Star Wars stories; Stover was writing real literature that happened to be set in the Star Wars universe.

What famous authors did a media tie-in novel that surprised you?

Main Post:

I Googled James S.A. Corey this morning and saw that they (Abraham and Franck) did a Star Wars tie-in novel.

I also recall that N.K. Jemison worked on a Mass Effect Andromeda tie-in novel.

Are there any other examples of authors large in the speculative fiction space outside of media tie-ins that did one that surprised you?

(I’d argue maybe Robert Jordan’s Conan books, but he wrote those before Eye of the World was published).

Adrian Tchaikovsky wrote a Warhammer 40,000 novel last year, after “Shadows of the Apt”, “Children of Time”, and about half a dozen major industry awards.

Laurel K. Hamilton wrote a Star Trek (TNG) novel in ‘92, a year before the first “Anita Blake” book (which would end up being a fairly popular fantasy/romance series), and a Dungeons & Dragons (Ravenloft) novel in ‘94, the year after the first Blake book.

Collection of media tie-in edition books

Main Post:

I got the Eclipse book (atom books publisher) to complete this specific collection. I was totally devastated when i saw it was a different size from the others! Does anyone know how many sizes they come in, just so i don't get another one that is a whole other size? Why would the same publisher do this lol. Also please show me your media tie-in editions, i would love to see them :p

Top Comment: My media tie-ins, complete set and all with the posters still inside! I also have two of the smaller mass market paperbacks (Twilight and Eclipse) and plan on buying the other two to complete the set.
